Thank you so much for such a beautiful place to stay as we came down for our daughter's wedding.

The place is so accommodating with all of the necessary items for cooking and housing our extended family. My grandkids loved hiking the trails around the house, swimming in the hot tub and pool, and drinking milk and juice from fancy glassware (plastic)! :) The games and toys were a hit!

The sunset and sunrise were breathtaking. The beds were so comfortable and appreciated after several days of travel, wedding prep, etc.

We came for our daughter's 14th birthday and surprised her with this perfect LOTR themed home. She is a huge fan! All our kids enjoyed their stay - there was literally something for everyone to do (9 mo. - 14 yr old kids).

We came to Second Breakfast to celebrate K's 18th birthday and high school graduation. We had a fantastic time!

The house was perfectly equipped for cooking breakfasts and dinners. The kids (4, 5, and 1 yr old) absolutely enjoyed the toys and play areas downstairs. The views are exceptional!

We hiked (the Rainbow Trail was great!) and used the walking sticks. We rode horses, biked and fished. It was a great adventure!

At last, we come to the end of our journey at Second Breakfast. Upon arrival, we instantly felt as if we were in the Shire, or Rivendell. It’s so peaceful and quiet here. Our family absolutely enjoyed every minute of our stay here. Lots of memories were made this week – lots of games played, lots of laughter, adventures taken to Boone, Blowing Rock, Lil Hidden Gems, and even Mystery Hill. We celebrated a birthday. Overall, its one of the best vacations we ever had – and that’s saying something!

Thank you for opening your home to us. Every detail was thought of. We definitely enjoyed all of the LOTR touches in the house, and had a blast finding all the LOTR pop figures. This place just invites you to relax – and we did.

And that view off the deck… to adapt my favorite JRRT phrase, you step out the deck into a far green country never under a swift sunset.

We’re sad to leave, but as JRRT wrote, not all tears are an evil. We look forward to returning to Second Breakfast on another adventure. When we do, I’m sure someone (me) will echo the words of Sam…

Stepping in to the cabin to be greeted by the word, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us” (JRR T) makes one pause and realize how lucky we are to have this time to steal away from our busy lives. How blessed to simply stop and hit pause and sit and listen to one another and the real world around us. Nature sounds much more harmonious away from mankind.

Dear F & J,

We are a group of 5 that traveled here for Merlefest. It was the 2nd trip for 4 of us and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the festival. Last September, we stayed further up the mountain, but the 5-7 minute drive from the gate suited us much better this time around.

The house was a delight and although I read all the Tolkien books to my children, I was struck by the sayings you chose to incorporate into your decor. I helped myself to several of your bookmarks because that saying too spoke to my heart. My dear husband planned our 1st trip here for September 2021, but he died unexpectedly in April before this trip. We had been together for over 40 years so to say I'm lost, is an understatement. But the stay here and yes, some of the simple truths and musings you display have helped me on this journey. Thank you!

What a treat to stay at Second Breakfast! The adults were outnumbered, but the basement provided endless entertainment options - we loved all the games! The one thing we forgot to bring? Coffee. You SAVED US with the stocked kitchen. We even used the hot chocolate to entice the kiddos to use their own legs to walk back on our brisk outing to the "Daniel Boone Trail" and back. We loved the cozy fire and some even braved the hot tub in 10 degree weather with wind chill. This was our first adventure with all the cousins and everyone wants to come back! Thank you so much!

Happy New Year! We loved being able to bring 4 generations to your lovely home while we moved our daughter into her apartment at App State. We especially appreciated all the essentials and amenities that were available to us. We travel a lot with our family and try to bring our own necessities. But, having replacements as well as additional perks was very much enjoyed. My 5 year old grandson especially loved the hot tub-bubble bath. We hope to return in the warmer weather as we visit our daughter over the next four years. We hope "someone" enjoys the homemade sour dough bread that we left as a "thank you". Thank you for all the firewood - we kept the fire going the whole time we were here.

This is our fourth visit to Leatherwood and it never disappoints. This trip was no exception. We did it all - horseback riding, tubing, shopping in Blowing Rock, ziplining, hiking the Silver Veil waterfall. Hanging out and relaxing and watching college football was also fun. Second Breakfast amenities were all exceptional and made our stay very special. The weather cooperated and made it enjoyable for all our activities. We will remember our special stay with family and friends and return to Leatherwood and if available, Second Breakfast. Thank you.

When you turn on the news, you hear about wildfires, flash floods, Afghan war... all under the blanket of COVID-19 pandemic that has been going on for 18 months... Then you managed to get away for the weekend to a mountain resort and somehow you feel that the world will be fine.

The morning trek along one of several hiking trails had reinforced the "Fellowship of 9". Have I mentioned the hammocks on the grounds... helling one to sleep after a long hike?!

So thank you for sharing this wonderful Second Breakfast cabin with its fantastic view (totally relaxing... that alone is well-worth the trip). Salamat ng marami... until next time!

Second Breakfast was an escape and much needed reset for our family. We originally booked our stay to celebrate our daughter's birthday - her wish - to see meteor showers. We could not have picked a better place for our family of 4. We've rented many places over the years and this was by far the best! You thought of everything someone could want - hiking sticks, blankets, detergent, and trash bags. Such a beautiful and serene place - we will definitely be back!

This cabin exceeded all of our expectations. We came here with our 6 kids for 4 nights and we enjoyed every moment, even when we got lost in the woods for a few hours on our second day. We loved seeing all the wildlife and the beautiful views on the back porch. I personally loved all the extra touches around the house. My kids loved all the games, especially air hockey. The hot tub was perfect. We avoided electronics excepts for a family movie in the basement each night. This was our first stay at Leatherwood but my kids are already asking when we can come back for another trip. Thankyou for sharing this beautiful cabin with us.

Second Breakfast was the perfect place for a couple's weekend getaway! We got to play in the game room, hang out upstairs & downstairs, had morning (mainly wet) out on the deck. Celebrated our son's 18th birthday with a long weekend stay. Everything was wonderful. Can't believe how well thought out and provided for everything. We had a wonderful time in your beautiful cabin! This is our 2nd time at Leatherwood for Valentine's weekend and although it was cold and rainy the whole time, we had the best time just hanging out. Thanks to all the amazing things to do inside the cabin! We have a 3 and 6 year old and they were happy the whole trip.

We love the Lord of the Rings theme and had a lot of fun reading all the pictures and finding all the LOTR items throughout.

Beautiful views and very relaxing. You have thought of everything needed and it was greatly appreciated (all the little details). Would love to come stay again!

Our 4th visit to LW with our family of 5. 2 grown boys and 1 16 year old daugher who enjoyed the air hockey. We cooked every meal here except for one lunch at Blowing Rock at Speckled Trout which was yummy. LW had snow and it was delightful! We hiked for over an hour down Wagon Ridge to Rainbow then back up the road. Such a beautiful place. Your home is very well stocked and we loved the games & puzzles.

Dan, Henry, Andy, Marg and I had a marvelous time. The Lord of the Rings theme made us smile repeatedly. Looking out of the window at night - the lit-up houses were the beacond fires started by Pippin. I loved the Hobbit feet in the cupboard and so much more. Andy and Dan rode bike trails, Marg and Seamus explored the area occassionally with Dan and Henry. I just absorbed the solitude and views. This place is so soothing. We very much enjoyed our quick 2 day getaway to Second Breakfast. We have 3 little boys 5 & under, so although we aren't familiar with LOTR, we ARE familiar with a second breakfast in this family. We loved the open layout and the older boys enjoyed having the basement (along with Grandpa!) as their own "house". Leatherwood Mountain never disappoints (our 4th visit & 4th cabin) and this was no exception. The details (down to the Christmas tree!) did not go unnoticed. Thank you!

This was our first trip to Leatherwood and we absolutely loved it. Your cabin is beautiful and felt like a home away from home! The decor is amazing and all the personal touches from the extra throw blankets to the bath soak made it even more welcoming. The kids loved all of the games and the hot tub! We explored and went hiking everyday. We also went fishing and rode the horses. I especially enjoyed the view with my morning coffee and evening wine. We also enjoyed stargazing each night. We booked a two-night stay last minute to introduce our kids to the mountains. Second Breakfast did not disappoint. We also are LOTR/Tolkien fans, and often tease our youngest about his second breakfasts. Our older two kids (14 & 12) loved hiking the creek and trails. The youngest (10) came not wanting to hike but doing it with pride that he accomplished something new. (He loved the hot tub.) Perfectly appointed and beautifully decorated.
